INCLUDE A PASSPORT OR DHS TRUSTED TRAVELER CARD. NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY RAMPING UP ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE EDUCATION WITH A NEW AI AND MACHINE LEARNING INSTITUTE AND DEGREE PROGRAMS. THE INSTITUTE FOR APPLIED PRACTICE IN AI AND MACHINE LEARNING LAUNCHED LAST SPRING. NOW, THE UNIVERSITY IS PLANNING TO LAUNCH THE STATE’S FIRST BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN AI IN THE FALL AND IS DEVELOPING A MASTER’S PROGRAM IN APPLIED AI. THE IDEA IS TO REALLY PREPARE AI ENGINEERS SO PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND THE FOUNDATION OF AI ARE ABLE TO USE AI TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AS WELL. ALSO, PEOPLE THAT CAN CREATE NEW AI TO SOLVE PROBLEMS. BECAUSE ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE OBSERVED IS THAT AI IS NOT JUST A BLACK BOX THAT YOU THROW TO A PROBLEM, AND IT’S GOING TO MAGICALLY SOLVE IT. VERY OFTEN YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY OPEN THAT BOX AND CHANGE IT. HOW IT WORKS TO REALLY MEET THE NEEDS OF THE STAKEHOLDERS. THE INSTITUTE IS ALSO BUILDING GENERAL EDUCATION, AI COURSES,

New Mexico State University is preparing to launch New Mexico’s first bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence this fall, as part of its efforts to educate students about AI and machine learning through the Institute for Applied Practice in AI and Machine Learning, which was launched last spring.”The idea really is to prepare AI engineers, so people who understand the foundation of AI, and use it to solve problems, as well also people that can create new AI to solve problems, because AI is not a black box where you can throw problems at it and it’ll solve it,” said a representative from the institute. “Very often, you need to open that box and change how it works to meet the needs of the stakeholders.”The institute is also developing a master’s degree in applied AI and building general education AI courses.
