Although Colorado is well-known for its outdoors, the state is also home to a wonderful culture and arts scene.

Here are ten art museums to check out around Colorado:

1. Denver Art Museum

Founded in 1893, the Denver Art Museum is one of the largest art museums between Chicago and the West Coast. The museum includes more than 70,000 works of art in 12 collections that represent cultures around the world. Visitors 18 and under get free general admission to the museum every day.

2. Aspen Art Museum

As an “exhibition-focused, non-collecting museum” this spot offers international contemporary art exhibits and public programs to provide enriching experiences for its visitors. Admission to the Aspen Art Museum is free.

3. Museum of Contemporary Art Denver

Located near Denver’s LoDo area, this museum presents “both world-class exhibitions and quirky events, serious lectures and epic parties.” The museum provides a forum for contemporary art, creating a “dialogue about the art of our time.”

4. Clyfford Still Museum

As part of Denver’s Civic Center Cultural Complex, this museum represents 93 percent of abstract expressionist artist Clyfford Still’s work (which includes about 3,125 works created between 1920 and 1980). The museum offers interactive features, outdoor terraces, a hands-on art creation studio, programs, events and more.

5. The Michael Garman Museum & Gallery

This Colorado Springs museum is home to Michael Garman’s unique sculptural theater exhibit ‘Magic Town,’ a miniature city built at a 1:6th scale. Visitors can walk through and experience the sculptures three-dimensionally.

6. American Museum of Western Art

This nonprofit museum houses The Anschutz Collection, a formerly private collection of paintings that showcase the art of the American West from the early 19th century to the present. Visitors can enjoy the museum’s more than 300 paintings, created by more than 180 artists. 

7. Steamboat Art Museum

As it is located in “a remote region where art museum exposure is limited by geography,” Steamboat Art Museum “fills an important cultural niche for northwest Colorado.” The museum has presented over 45 exhibitions since it opened in 2005, and hosts events and workshops.

8. Prismajic presents Shiki Dreams

Prismajic provides an immersive multi-sensory art experience in Lakewood. The creators use cutting-edge technology and physical art to “create spaces of great wonder, discovery, and joy.”

9. Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art

This museum was founded in 1972 and now presents a variety of exhibits, education programs and outreach initiatives. The museum aims to inspire creativity and foster community through contemporary art.

10. Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art

Visitors can explore art exhibits with works spanning 150 years, and a Colorado and regional art collection from 1845 to the present at this museum. The museum also features a retrospective of Colorado painter Vance Kirkland. Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art displays its art in ‘salon style,’ with fine art (paintings and sculpture) in the same galleries as decorative art.
