Downtown Melbourne bar gets a reality TV makeover | Arts & Entertainment
Formally known as “Hurricane Creek,” Neon Rodeo has a new look and fresh feel following it’s TV makeover.
Downtown Melbourne’s nightlife just got a facelift. The beloved Hurricane Creek, a classic spot known for its at-no-cost line dancing and street parties, recently underwent a major transformation from the famous reality show “Bar Rescue.”
Now, with a much bolder and fresh look, the bar has drawn in both curious locals and springtime tourists.
How it all started
Hurricane Creek first opened its doors in early 2017. The saloon’s owner, Randy Bennett, shared details about the venue’s rich history.
“There were zero country-style venues downtown,” Bennett said. “I saw an opportunity to create something different. What drew me here was the camaraderie of the other business owners—the passion, the history and the community.”
For years, Hurricane Creek has offered a sweet spot for new and old country lovers to spend their nights dancing to live music with good food and drinks. They were set apart from other venues, hosting massive outdoor New Year’s Eve parties featuring famous country artists.
“We were a community watering hole—a place for friends to come together, dance, laugh and feel safe,” Bennett said.
The rescue
The idea for the saloon’s participation in the hit reality show “Bar Rescue” was a mutual collaboration between the producers and the establishment. The show was a massive opportunity for the bar to improve its operations further, but Bennett had a deeper motivation for its revamp.
“[The local businesses’] are struggling to get clientele because some just aren’t coming out as much anymore,” Bennett said. “I was watching my neighbors struggle to get enough business, so I wanted to do something that brought attention on a national level to Downtown Melbourne. I wanted to remind people how amazing this place is.”
The filming process
The reveal of the newly-decorated bar was filmed in mid-April of this year. An estimated 3,000 people showed up for the filming, which is one of the biggest outcomes the show has seen yet.
The TV crew films various portions of the makeover’s reveal: the revamped staff operations, the food and drink services and the customer’s reactions.
Attendee Annie Jones, a local in Melbourne, had an unforgettable experience during the filming of the show. The experience felt surreal to her as she watched the camera crew and operators manage everything behind the scenes.
“The energy during filming was electric,” Jones said. “The camera operators and producers were running around like crazy to get all the shots. It was so fun seeing Jon Taffer [the host of the show] really lock in when the chaos started to unfold. What you see on TV is definitely what’s happening in real life—I can attest to that.”
Jones hadn’t been to Hurricane Creek until it got its revamp. She never felt enticed to go inside, but following the Bar Rescue update, Jones thinks the bar looks a lot classier and cleaner.
While the experience was unforgettable, participating in the show wasn’t a total piece of cake.
“You go through various background checks and have to jump through a lot of hoops. They interviewed my team, myself and even a few people around the community,” Bennett said.
But the experience paid off in more ways than one.
“If I could do the show again, I’d say yes in a heartbeat. The biggest thing I took away from this experience was the importance of communication and pride. I learned things about myself that helped me grow—not just as a manager, but as a person too.”
Bennett also credited the host of the show, Taffer, for being a source of the rediscovery of his spark. “After losing my father last year, I lost some of my fire. This experience helped me get it back.”
What’s new and what’s next
The makeover of the saloon, now known as “Neon Rodeo,” includes upgraded lighting, new furniture, new modern decorations and fun DJ effects, giving the space a more polished atmosphere. One of their new standout features is an in-house brewing system, allowing the bar to introduce its own house beer for the first time in the near future.
Bennett sends an invitation to the students of the local university he loves and supports: “Come check it out. It’s a cool vibe—no pressure. Just fun, dancing, pool, good food and a safe, clean environment. If you’ve never tried line dancing, give it a shot. We’re not your typical bar.”
He added, “We love Florida Tech. We want you to feel like this is your home.”
Stay tuned
While no official release date has been set, the episode is estimated to be released in the fall 2025 semester. In the meantime, students can follow the bar’s social media on Instagram and Facebook for updates regarding the revamp and any upcoming events.
Neon Rodeo is 18+ on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 21+ on Fridays and Saturdays. The venue features a full kitchen with various late-night food options.
“We’re not trying to be the biggest bar,” Bennett said. “We just want to be the best version of ourselves—a place people want to come back to.”
