The Bank of Thailand, together with prominent financial technology partners, has introduced a new cross-border QR payment system to boost tourism from China to Thailand. With this system, transactions for Chinese tourists traveling to Thailand will be simplified, while at the same time positioning Thailand as a major travel destination for Chinese tourists. Tourists from China can now use their Alipay e-wallets to pay to a broad merchant base in Thailand linked with the PromptPay QR payment system.
The Bank of Thailand and Krungthai Bank and National ITMX, as the project’s navigating partners, especially simplify the payment procedures for the Chinese tourists as well as the business owners in Thailand. This new system will forecastably change the tourism landscape in the area and especially Thailand which has growing interest from Chinese tourists. The aim of this collaboration is to provide seamless cross-border payment functionality to Chinese tourists and consequently foster the growth of the tourism industry within the Kingdom of Thailand.
Facilitating Seamless Payments for Chinese Tourists
The introduction of the new QR payment system is set to remove barriers for Chinese tourists, offering a seamless way to pay for goods and services. By scanning PromptPay QR codes with their Alipay app, Chinese travelers can easily make payments at millions of participating merchants across the country. This effort aligns with Thailand’s continued push to enhance its digital infrastructure and support the growth of its tourism sector.
In the initial phase of the rollout, the system will cater to Chinese tourists who are already familiar with Alipay. As a result, it will allow these visitors to continue using a payment method they are accustomed to, without needing to carry physical currency or cards. This level of convenience is expected to drive more Chinese tourists to Thailand and make the country a more attractive destination for tourism.
Supporting Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs)
One of the key benefits of this new payment system is its ability to support Thailand’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). By providing local merchants with the tools to accept payments via Alipay’s network, these businesses can reach a wider international audience. The initiative also helps foster inclusivity, particularly in smaller cities and tourist locations that may not traditionally cater to international payment systems.
With millions of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand each year, the ability to make seamless payments using familiar technology such as Alipay is expected to enhance the overall tourist experience. This integration will encourage spending across various sectors of the economy, from shopping and food to attractions and transportation.
Expanding Business Opportunities for Thai Merchants
The collaboration between Thailand’s financial institutions and Ant International, the parent company of Alipay, brings significant advantages to local merchants. Through the use of the PromptPay QR system, businesses across Thailand will gain access to a new customer base of Chinese travelers, creating fresh opportunities for growth. In particular, SMEs in tourism-centric areas such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Pattaya are expected to see a direct benefit from this initiative.
With Thai businesses now able to accept payments through Alipay, the country is positioning itself as a leader in digital payment infrastructure. This development is particularly crucial as global tourists increasingly seek seamless and efficient payment options while travelling.
Thailand’s Strategic Role in Global Tourism and Trade
This new payment infrastructure represents more than just a solution for tourists it is a part of Thailand’s broader strategy to remain competitive in the global tourism market. By adopting advanced digital solutions, the country aims to strengthen its economic ties with key international markets such as China, one of the largest sources of outbound tourism globally.
As part of a long-term strategy, the Bank of Thailand’s initiative seeks to enhance Thailand’s digital financial ecosystem. With increased adoption of digital payment systems like PromptPay, Thailand hopes to ensure that its financial infrastructure remains robust and adaptable to the needs of both domestic and international stakeholders.
Conclusion: A New Era for Tourism in Thailand
The new feature the Thailand-China QR-code system for payment will enable Thai tourism to recover and expand by leaps and bounds. Thai tourism is expected to triple in the near future thanks to the expansion of payment options. This will increase economic activities with China in tourism, foreign trade, and other activities. The Thai QR payment system will remove payment bottlenecks to make Thailand’s tourism experience richer and create robust ties with China.
